NakedEarth to Discover Visibility
For viewshed and line-of-sight analysis high quality terrain information free of first surface features is beneficial. NakedEarth is the right product to determine visibility from point to point along a given line-of-sight and from an observer’s point in all directions in a viewshed.
Cell tower layout
A DTM is preferred to determine cell coverage since radio-frequency (RF) propagation is not perturbed by treed and other first surface features. The analysis result based on a DSM can differ widely as demonstrated in the example of 10 towers in Pennsylvania, USA, with a tower height of 15m and a maximal range of 5km.
View from an estate property
A key selling feature of a property is a comprehensive view over the surrounding countryside. This example shows an estate (white circle) close to Lake Michigan, USA, and the areas which can be viewed from the site (purple) to a distance of 30 km.
Using a DSM for the line-of-sight calculation, much of the view is obscured by first surface features (e.g. trees) which appear as “walls” in the DSM even if they are not blocking the view completely in reality. The analysis results based on NakedEarth give a more realistic overview of the site
